COVID-19 AND CONTACT CENTRE AND BACK WORKERS
THIS RESEARCH MAY SAVE LIVES – PLEASE, PLEASE HELP
This may have landed in your inbox because you work in a call centre or a back office.
Professionals, including health and safety experts, academics and trade union officers, are worried. They are hearing reports of call-handlers and office workers attending a dangerous environment– their workplaces! Many agents have told me their fears; no/insufficient social distancing, multi-occupation workstations, lifts, poor sanitisation, re-used headsets, heating and ventilation systems spreading germs. Open-plan offices spreading contamination. Home working denied. Alongside bad practice there is good practice which we must learn from.
We need to make changes urgently. We have anecdotes but we now need harder data to make a difference – to ensure the government acts, to get negligent employers to learn and change their practices, to inform the Health and Safety Executive and above all to make you safe.
I am Phil Taylor, Professor of Work & Employment (University of Strathclyde). I've researched contact centres and offices for 25 years. I've always tried to improve work conditions, but this is my most important study ever. Check me out: https://www.strath.ac.uk/staff/taylorphilipprof/
You can be assured of complete confidentiality. No names will be quoted, nothing identifying you included in any report. Ethics - completing the survey indicates consent. I alone will access the data. A report will aggregate findings, highlighting problems needing immediate action. The study is independent, but the STUC and unions who are taking serious initiatives to protect workers will draw on findings to press for further change.
We need as many call-handlers and back office workers as possible to complete this survey urgently. EVERY MINUTE COUNTS. Hard data can help stop dangerous practices.
